Let me start off by providing a quote “There are no speed limits on the road to excellence.”
A new title for Kings of speed and shred might very well come from Canada. Oh yeah and they are from Yellowknife in The Northwest Territories. Say what?! For people not familiar with the vast Canadian geography, Yellowknife is WAY up north in Oh Canada! Not many bands in general are born in that area and certainly not ones beaming with a bright future like Booze Cruise.
Influenced by their shredder brothers AWS, TIAS, Mute and most certainly Strung Out, Booze Cruise have delivered “Moose Stuff” which is the band’s first album, an especially amazing feat after only starting up as a unit in mid-2010. This album is packed with punches, uppercuts, and pure slobber knockers and does not let down if you enjoy melodic hardcore punk and even 80’s trash metal. I knew these guys were speed freaks but damn, after a whole listen these north men surely do not sound like a new act. They must have fine “Grind” in their Tim Horton’s coffee up there.
The highlights of this album come from many angles, especially due to the vocal harmonies lead by front man Shawn Taggart. His voice is like a mixture of RJ from Asado and Denis from 88 Fingers Louie. And something else that is clearly noticeable is the band’s love of solos (hence the metal), guitar-monies, and their darn sweet back-ups! These guys also know how to end tunes the right way. Yes, it’s critical to have a solid intro but the outros from Booze Cruise are memorable for me. For instance, “Stoner Bashing Time” has an outro that you just NEED to see/hear live!
Props to Booze Cruise for getting their name out in the scene and wanting to put Yellowknife on the map. Let me tell you, it can be a bummer as a band to be up in Yellowknife but these guys went on the road for a half day trek to record their album (still in Canada) and now are planning a cross-Canadian tour and possibly even some gigs abroad. So from now on if I hear a band saying they can’t find shows, it’s a good opportunity to just stamp Booze Cruise on their shoulder. Makes for good promo so it’s a win-win for both sides.
