Some of Calgary's punk and hardcore veterans (formerly ofThis Standoff, Deville, Fallout Frequency, One Shot Left, Inventing the Wheel) have successfully banded together for a resurgence of melodic hardcore with their newest project, Torches to Triggers. It's no surprise that Torches to Triggers rocked their 2011 New Year's debut with Strung Out: It's a solid five-piece outfit with a post-hardcore prerogative and punk rock roots.

Their debut album, Doomsday in Douglasdale delivers twelve solid songs comfortably nestled between catchy and cataclysm. 'Dead Sea' opens the 33 minute knocker with a soft-serve moshability that threads throughout the album. With influences from Evergreen Terrace, Bury Your Dead, and Comeback Kid, the band flows from tattooed swooners like 'This Moment' to some serious circle-pit starters, a la 'The Voice Inside'.

The sound is surprisingly organic given the range. Post-hardcore all too often pitfalls due to overly ambitions breakdowns or predictable song structures. The lead guitar is catchy with a heavy metal influence, the rhythm guitar is honest, the baseline is solid, and the drums are true-to-punk--hard, fast, and loud.

Lyrically, each track has a 'doomsday' element. Tracks exude ideas on: love or the loss of it; the status quo or questioning it; ruminating on change or being the catalyst to change. In true hardcore vein, the overarching theme is standing by your values and not selling yourself short. The highs and lows of the human condition are highlighted by Chris Kreuger's heavy-hitting harmonies and guttural snarls. His varied vocal range and style (think M. Shadows from Avenged Sevenfold) gives each track a different, balanced texture that piques interest for repeat listens.

Keep an eye out for Torches to Triggers. The Calgary quintet is reviving the world of melodic hardcore with their Doomsday effort.
